“It was a brilliant idea,” says David Dodson. Its fireplace aglow, the large-but-cozy room “is a wonderful place to have dinner.” It was the first step on the road to possibilities, but it also created a problem. “The only access from the kitchen to the new dining room,” says Wright, “was through the mudroom off the garage,” which all agreed was neither gracious nor convenient. The solution, a gently 3 of 4 curving stepped segue between the rooms, became part of the kitchen addition that gave a sculptural, accordion like profile to the exterior of the house. Rather than creating one large room, Wright enclosed the porch and kept the space as an informal dining breakfast room for the Dodsons and their three children, now ages 19, 17, and 13. A gently curving wall, which plays into the arc of the large kitchen island, ties the spaces together. Offsetting the curves are angles. Lots of angles. Angles that hide, that invite, that almost move. “Intrigue,” says Wright, “is seminal to my work.” Indeed, there is a maze-like quality to the front foyer, recently revised as part of phase II of the renovation plan. “We didn’t initially have the budget for the front of the house,” says Dodson, and it was rarely used. So, years after the kitchen was completed, they called Wright again.
“With all the funny-colored paint and angled walls,” David Dodson says, “the kitchen is just a fun place to be.” The view from the mudroom takes in the angular wood mantle and the breakfast room beyond. The rolled natural rubber floor was chosen for its ergonomic, acoustic, and low-maintenance qualities. Page 3 Next
